How to check a contractor's license in Arizona
Look the contractor up on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) Contractor Search before you sign anything. Review their license record and make sure the license class allows the work in your contract.
Step 1. Get the ROC number
Every licensed Arizona contractor has an ROC license number. Ask for it, or look for it on their website or estimate. Ours are ROC #362667 and #362636.
Step 2. Look it up
Go to roc.az.gov and use the Contractor Search. Check that:
- you are looking at the right company, the one named on your estimate and contract, and
- the license class allows the work listed in your contract.
Step 3. Get it in writing
The ROC recommends getting written estimates from at least three contractors, with the price and who pulls the building permits written into the estimate, and checking that the estimate matches the contract before you sign. Change orders should be signed by both of you.
Step 4. Pay the right way
- Never pay in cash.
- Make checks payable to the company named in your signed contract.
- Do not let payments get ahead of the work, apart from things like special order materials and permits.
If something goes wrong
You can file a complaint with the ROC within two years from the date of occupancy or the date the last work was performed. Eligible homeowners can apply to the Residential Contractors' Recovery Fund, which the ROC says covers up to $30,000 to have work corrected or completed. The ROC notes these protections are not available if you hire an unlicensed contractor.
